Knowledge of a range of languages and cultures is essential to enable us to navigate the world, socially and culturally, as well as economically and politically. In a Britain now operating independently of the EU, it is arguably more critical than before that communication and language skills are developed and sustained.聽Strong communication skills in European languages such as French, German and Spanish remain integral to the UK’s strategic interests. These聽are consistently in the top sought-after languages by employers,聽together with Mandarin, Russian and Arabic. Because of this, and because of the range of skills to be gained, learning modern foreign languages forms an important part of the curriculum at 麻豆传媒AV在线看.聽

Studying foreign languages strengthens capacities in a range of areas:

  • Cultural awareness:

Insight into a variety of cultures, values and customs outside of our own, developing a range of perspectives on situations and encouraging empathetic approaches.

  • Mother tongue proficiency:

Getting to grips with the structures and mechanics of another language nurtures proficiency in one’s native language.聽

Mastering grammar structures聽and聽sequences of sound develops skills in interpreting patterns and problem-solving, which are applied聽to a range of subjects and industries including history, politics, business, STEM, finance, marketing, journalism and engineering.聽

 

  • Skills for life:

Learning a language goes beyond just studying for an exam. It is a skill for life that opens so many doors, gives people choices, broadens one鈥檚 horizon in so many ways.聽

 

The languages curriculum at 麻豆传媒AV在线看

At 麻豆传媒AV在线看 it is important that pupils have a balance of classical grounding, connection to our European neighbours and access to non-Latinate languages.

Upon entry in First Year, pupils begin by studying:

  • Latin
  • A European language (French, German or Spanish)
  • Mandarin

In Third Year, pupils continue with their original combination, and may additionally choose to study a new European language ab initio.

At GCSE:

  • For GCSE, pupils must continue with at least one Modern European language (this can be their First Year language or their ab initio Third Year language).

Our Team:

Our department is a strong team of passionate linguists whose enthusiasm for languages is their main asset in the classroom. Between us, we cover a variety of specialisms, including literature, linguistics, translation, history of language, slang, culture, politics and art, which synchromesh to offer our pupils a broad and engaging language learning experience, and provide links to their other areas of study.

Pupils always have access to the latest online and digital resources for support and guidance in their language studies.
